Why Visit Sri Lanka?
Sri Lanka packs ancient rock fortresses, misty tea country, wildlife safaris and golden beaches into an island you can cross in a day. It's one of the closest international trips from India, with short flights from Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi and other cities, and the food will feel familiar yet different: think hoppers, kottu and coconut-rich curries.
The classic route loops from Colombo through the Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Dambulla), the hill country (Kandy, Ella) and down to the south coast (Mirissa, Galle). It's great value, and the scenic train through the tea hills is one of the most beautiful rail journeys in the world.

7-day planSri Lankan Food to Try

- Rice and curry — Rice with several vegetable, dal and meat or fish curries, plus pol sambol (spiced coconut). The everyday lunch.
- Kottu roti — Chopped flatbread stir-fried with vegetables, egg or meat; listen for the clanging of the cooks' blades.
- Hoppers (appa) — Bowl-shaped rice-flour pancakes, often with an egg cooked inside; great for breakfast or dinner.
- String hoppers — Steamed rice-noodle nests eaten with curry and coconut sambol.
- Lamprais — Rice and curries baked in a banana leaf, a Dutch Burgher speciality.
- Watalappan — Coconut and jaggery custard with cardamom.
- Ceylon tea — Visit a tea factory in the hill country and taste it fresh.
Vegetarian tip: vegetarian food is easy to find, especially rice and curry, dosa and vadai in Tamil areas. Many dishes use Maldive fish flakes, so ask for "no fish" if you're strictly vegetarian.
Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka
West and south coasts and the hill country (Colombo, Galle, Mirissa, Kandy, Ella): December to March is the driest and most popular time.
East coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay): April to September, when the south-west monsoon brings rain to the other side of the island.
Year-round: the island has two monsoons, so somewhere is always in season. Expect 26–32°C on the coast and much cooler evenings in Ella and Nuwara Eliya.
Getting Around Sri Lanka
Car and driver: the most popular way to do the classic loop. Agree the route and price in advance; your driver arranges their own accommodation.
Trains: cheap and scenic, especially Kandy to Ella. Book reserved seats in advance on the official railway e-ticketing site or through an agent.
Tuk-tuks and taxis: use the PickMe or Uber apps in Colombo and larger towns, or agree the fare before you get in.
Buses: very cheap and go everywhere, but crowded and fast; fine for short trips with light luggage.
Travel Essentials
Visa for Indians: Indian passport holders need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for tourism, applied for online on the official Sri Lanka ETA website before you fly. Sri Lanka has at times waived the fee for Indian tourists, so check the current fee and use only the official site. Rules as of October 2026; always check the official website before you travel.
Money: Sri Lankan rupee (LKR). LKR 1,000 is roughly ₹280. Cards work in hotels and bigger restaurants; carry cash for tuk-tuks, small eateries and entry tickets. Indian rupees are not widely accepted.
Daily budget (per person): guesthouse or mid-range hotel share, food, transport and one paid sight usually come to LKR 15,000–25,000 a day. Major sites such as Sigiriya charge foreign-visitor prices in US dollars.
SIM card: Dialog, Mobitel and Hutch sell tourist SIMs at the airport with generous data.
Plugs: types D and G (and M), 230V. Many Indian plugs fit type D sockets, but bring a universal adapter.
Temple etiquette: cover shoulders and knees, remove shoes and hats, and never pose with your back to a Buddha statue. Buddha tattoos can cause problems on entry, so keep them covered.
