ðŸ™ï¸ Welcome to Singapore
Singapore is an ultra-modern city-state that feels like the future of Southeast Asia. It's clean, efficient, expensive compared to neighbors, but absolutely worth visiting. Best for 3-5 days. Everything is walkable or a quick MRT (subway) ride away.
First-timer itinerary: Marina Bay → Gardens by the Bay → Sentosa Island → Chinatown → Arab Street → local neighborhoods
Must-See Attractions
Marina Bay Sands (Icon, $$)
Singapore's most iconic building. The observation deck costs SGD 26 (budget) to SGD 85 (premium). Skip the hotel if you're not staying there - the view from Marina Bay Floating Platform (free) is almost as good.
Gardens by the Bay (Beautiful, $)
Two massive biodomes with plants from around the world. Cost: SGD 28 per dome or SGD 45 both. The nighttime light show on Supertrees is FREE after 7:45 PM - worth staying until evening.
Sentosa Island (Beach Day, $$)
Singapore's main beach destination. Monorail costs SGD 4, then the island has multiple beaches (Siloso, Palawan, Tanjong). Spend the day here: swim, walk jungle trails, visit S.E.A. Aquarium (SGD 40) if interested.
Chinatown (Authentic, Free-$$)
Historic neighborhood with temples, markets, and incredible food. Most attractions are free - just wander. Visit Thian Hock Keng Temple, grab tea, eat in a hawker center.
Arab Street / Kampong Glam (Culture, Free-$)
Muslim cultural district with beautiful architecture, small shops, street food. Sultan Mosque is free to visit (remove shoes). Grab Arab food, baklava, and coffee here.
Neighborhoods to Explore
Marina Bay (Modern)
Iconic hotels, expensive restaurants, Instagram-worthy views. Spend 1-2 hours here at night. The Void Deck at MBS basement has cheaper food options.
Chinatown (Historic)
Where Singapore's culture lives. Red lanterns, narrow streets, temples, and hawker food. Spend 3-4 hours exploring. Smith Street and Maxwell Market have best food.
Kampong Glam (Cultural)
Arab-Muslim district. Haji Lane has Instagram-worthy murals and cafes. Try Arab food, visit the Sultan Mosque, shop at independent boutiques.
Little India (Colorful)
Hindu temples, Indian restaurants, textile shops. Serangoon Road is the main street. Get a fresh mango lassi, visit Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple, eat at Komala Vilas (amazing dosa).
Sentosa Island (Beach)
Beaches, resorts, and theme parks. Universal Studios Singapore (SGD 79) if interested. Siloso Beach is best for swimming.
Hawker Food (The Real Meal Experience)
Hawker centers are Singapore's soul - open-air food courts where vendors cook in stalls. Incredibly cheap and delicious. Must-try:
- Hainanese Chicken Rice: SGD 3-5. Poached chicken over oily rice. Hunt for it at Maxwell Market or Lau Pa Sat.
- Laksa: SGD 4-6. Spicy coconut noodle soup. Fish curry version in Katong area is best.
- Chili Crab: SGD 30-50+ at restaurants but worth one splurge meal.
- Satay: SGD 0.50-1 per stick. Try at Lau Pa Sat in evening.
- Carrot Cake (Fried Radish Cake): SGD 2-3. Sweet and savory. Often black (dark soy sauce) variety.
- Kaya Toast: Breakfast item - toasted bread with coconut jam, SGD 2-3.
Top Hawker Centers: Maxwell Market, Lau Pa Sat, Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice (queue is long but worth it)
Transport & Getting Around
MRT (Subway)
Singapore's subway is world-class. Cost: SGD 0.85-3.50 per ride. Buy an EZ-Link card (SGD 12 with SGD 7 credit) and top up. Single day pass SGD 12.
Grab (Ride-sharing)
Cheaper than taxis. First ride often has promo codes (SGD 5-10 off). Good backup when MRT is closed for maintenance.
Walking
Singapore is walkable. Marina Bay to Chinatown = 15 min walk. Sentosa Island = 20 min walk from downtown.
